Tourism We visited the Indiana Limestone plant at Oolitic, just north of Bedford, and saw the vast storage yard of cut limestone, but discovered that we could not enter the plant or actually see a quarry. The next day we stopped at the Lawrence County Museum in Bedford and found a card for Elite Tours, Inc. Our call to Michele Kirkman was rewarded with a prompt plan for a next day tour of the Architectural Stone shop in Bedford, plus a drive-by of prominent Limestone homes and the cemetery and church in the immediate area. This and a visit to her Halfmoon Limestone Products shop rounded out our delightful tour of the area. Our travels have included visits to many of the landmark buildings clad with Indiana Limestone, including Chicago’s City Hall & Tribune Tower, New York’s Empire State Building & Rockefeller Center, Washington’s National Cathedral & Pentagon, and the Biltmore Mansion in Ashville, NC. Things were explained in terms that my kids could understand and that also were of interest to myself and the other adults on the tour.
